Lindsey & Chelle are currently planning a visit to the Bumi Sehat Birth Clinic in Bali, Indonesia, and need your help. This clinic’s goal is to develop and implement a Community Based Sustainable Family Cooperative Health Care model targeting marginalized communities and families in Bali, Indonesia. Chelle & Lindsey would like to bring their hearts and knowledge to this community to help improve their infant and material mortality rate. The maternal mortality ratio in Bali, Indonesia is 718 deaths per 100,000 births. This means 718 babies and families are left without mothers per 100,000 births. Almost half these deaths are from postpartum hemorrhaging, largely due to malnutrition. Most maternal deaths that occur during pregnancy and childbirth are preventable through proper prenatal care and nutrition. The economic conditions currently present in Bali increase the risk of pregnant women eating less nutritious food, and getting fewer meals per day.
This is the only free health care facility for miles around, and provides everything from treatments for Malaria and staph infections to pre-natal care and delivery. Volunteering at this clinic gives us the opportunity to share our knowledge and services while working hand in hand with their team providing care to over 35 people a day.
Lindsey and Chelle hold parallel beliefs with the fundamental goals of this clinic, in that the unique and complex event of childbirth is an opportunity, never again repeated in a human lifetime.
If a mother and child are allowed a gentle birth experience; if bonding, eye to eye contact, and breast-feeding are supported, the child will have an intact ability to love and nurture.
Technologized childbirth, including protocols which separate mother and child at birth are culturally inappropriate. They can damage the mother- baby relationship necessary for successful breast-feeding, and can create an impaired ability for the child to love. Clearly the time has come on Earth, when we must protect the coming generation's ability to love and nurture one another as well as the planet itself, if the world is to survive at all.
